Deflector Dish
The Defector Dish is a
large outboard structure on most Federation starships, the source of
navigational and combat deflector shields. Usually located below the
saucer, in the forward secondary hull.
The deflector dish is
capable of channelling more energy through it than any other part of
the ship. In 2366, the Starship Enterprise-D used it's
deflector dish to create an intense blast of high frequency energy
designed to destroy a Borg cube headed to Earth. The blast burnt out
the ship's engines, and rendered the entire forward half of the
star-drive section and the lower half of the saucer uninhabitable.
The next year, the
Enterprise-D attempted a similar blast to allow them to escape
from a Tyken's Rift, but did not have enough power. In 2372 the
Starship Voyager channelled energy through it's deflector dish
in an attempt to escape from a subspace divergence field that was
duplicating their ship. In 2373, the starship Enterprise-E,
while trapped in the past, was forced to jettison it's deflector dish
in order to prevent Borg operatives from contacting reinforcements
from that era. ("The Best of Both Worlds" [TNG #74&75]; "Night
